Braces in Singapore: Cost, Pain, Best Age to Start & Everything Else You're Probably Googling at 1am
If you're reading this, chances are you've already typed some version of these into Google:
How much do braces cost in Singapore?
Are braces actually painful?
What's the best age to get braces?
Can I get braces as an adult?
How long is this going to take?
So let's just go through them properly — no fluff, no sales pitch, just what I'd tell you if you were sitting in my chair.
⸻
What are braces, and what should I expect?
Braces are brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by a wire that gently guides them into position over time. Once fitted, you'll come back for adjustments roughly every 4–6 weeks, where I check your progress and make small tweaks to keep things moving. Treatment is gradual — small, steady changes rather than one big shift.
What types of braces are available?
Metal braces are the classic, most affordable option and the workhorse for complex cases. Ceramic braces work the same way but use tooth-coloured brackets that blend in more. Self-ligating braces use a clip system instead of elastic ties. Lingual braces sit behind your teeth, making them essentially invisible from the front. The right type depends on your case, budget, and how discreet you want treatment to be.
Do I need braces? What Can Braces Actually Fix?
Braces get filed under "cosmetic" a lot, but honestly, most of the time it's about function too — how your teeth and jaw actually work together when you bite and chew.
Braces can help with:
Crooked or crowded teeth
Gaps between teeth
Teeth that stick out
Deep bites, open bites, crossbites, underbites
A bite that just doesn't quite meet properly
No two mouths are the same, so what "needs fixing" for you might be completely different from the person sitting next to you in the waiting room.
⸻
So... How Much Do Braces Cost in Singapore?
I know this is the question everyone actually clicked in for, and I wish I could just give you a number. But I can't — and any dentist who gives you a flat price without looking in your mouth first is guessing.
Cost depends on:
How complex your case is
How long treatment will realistically take
The type of braces or aligners you go with
Whether you need any extra procedures along the way (extractions etc)
Someone with mild crowding and someone with a significant bite issue are basically getting two completely different treatment plans — so the only honest way to get a real number is a consultation where I can actually assess your teeth.
⸻
Are Braces Painful?
This is the fear I hear about the most. Braces are not painful in the way people imagine. After you get them on, or after an adjustment, your teeth will feel sore or tender for a few days — that's just the gentle pressure doing its job of shifting things into place.
Most patients describe it as "pressure" or "achy," not sharp pain. And it fades within a few days as your teeth settle in.
Honestly? Almost every patient tells me afterwards that the anticipation was worse than the actual thing.
⸻
What's the Best Age to Get Braces?
Parents ask me this constantly, usually while side-eyeing their kid's teeth across the room.
In general, it helps to get a child's teeth and bite checked while they're still growing — not because they'll definitely need braces, but because if something needs monitoring, catching it early gives us more options later. Sometimes early treatment can guide jaw growth or make future treatment simpler.
But not every child needs braces the moment their teeth look a little wonky. For reference, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 — not because every child needs braces then, but so any developing issues can be caught and monitored early.
There's no magic age — it really depends on the individual case.
⸻
Can Adults Get Braces?
Yes. The idea that braces are "just for teenagers" is one of the most persistent myths I deal with. Adults get braces all the time — some never had the chance growing up, others had braces before and their teeth have since shifted back (very common, very normal).
As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, age really isn't the limiting factor people assume it is. One of my oldest braces patients was in her 60s. It is genuinely never too late.
⸻
How Long Does Treatment Actually Take?
This varies a lot, and I'll never give you a number I haven't actually assessed for.
What affects the timeline:
How complex your case is
How much movement your teeth actually need
Your bite
Braces vs. clear aligners
How consistently you wear your elastics or aligners (this one's on you 😅)
Some people are done within a year. Others, with more complex cases, take considerably longer. I'll give you a realistic estimate once I've actually looked at your teeth — not before.
⸻
Braces or Clear Aligners — Which One's Better?
Depends entirely on you.
Traditional braces are still excellent for a huge range of tooth movements and bite corrections. Clear aligners are popular because they're removable and more discreet — but that convenience comes with a catch: they only work if you actually wear them, typically 20–22 hours a day.
Both can get you great results. The "better" one is whichever fits your teeth, your bite, and honestly, your lifestyle and discipline.

What Actually Happens at a Braces Consultation?
If you've never done this before, here's roughly what to expect when you come in:
We talk about what's bothering you and what you want out of treatment
I examine your teeth, bite, and overall oral health
We discuss whether braces or aligners make more sense for you
I walk you through what treatment would actually look like
I give you a realistic timeline
We talk fees, and you can ask me anything
This is also just... your chance to ask the "silly" questions. There's no such thing, by the way.

Final Thoughts
If you've been sitting on questions about cost, pain, timing, or whether braces vs. aligners is right for you — that's completely normal, and honestly a good sign you're thinking it through rather than just booking blind.
Every smile really is different, which is why I can't give you a one-size-fits-all answer in a blog post (as much as I know you wish I could). A proper consultation is really the only way to get advice that's actually about your teeth, not just "teeth in general."
So if you've been thinking about it — that's step one :)
