Things I Wish I Could Tell Every Braces Patient
Smart Things I’d Do If I Were Wearing Braces Today
As a dentist with a Master’s in Orthodontics, I often get asked what I would do differently if I had to wear braces again.
The truth is that successful orthodontic treatment isn’t just about showing up for appointments. Small habits can make a huge difference to your overall experience and treatment outcome.
If I were a braces patient in 2026, these are the things I’d do.
1. Schedule Appointments Before Life Gets Busy
Work deadlines, examination periods, school holidays, and festive seasons have a way of filling up calendars quickly.
One of the most common reasons treatment gets delayed is simply because patients struggle to find appointment slots that fit their schedules.
Try to book your next appointment one to two weeks before major busy periods begin. Future you will be grateful that past you planned ahead.
2. Think Twice Before Choosing White or Clear Elastic Colours
White and clear elastic colours can look great on the day they are placed.
Unfortunately, if you enjoy coffee, tea, curry, laksa, or other strongly coloured foods and drinks, they can stain surprisingly quickly.
Darker colours tend to stay looking cleaner between visits and often require less maintenance.
3. Tell Your Dentist About Long Trips Early
Planning to travel for a month or longer?
Let your dentist know as early as possible.
We can often adjust appointment timing, treatment stages, and monitoring schedules to minimise disruptions while you’re away. A little planning can prevent unnecessary delays later.
4. Pack Orthodontic Essentials When Travelling
If you’re heading overseas, make sure your travel kit includes:
Orthodontic wax
A braces-friendly toothbrush
Interdental brushes
Extra elastics (if prescribed)
I also recommend scheduling your adjustment appointment at least a week before departure whenever possible.
This gives your teeth time to settle and reduces the chances of spending the first few days of your holiday dealing with soreness or discomfort.
5. Wear Your Elastics Consistently
Confession time: when I wore braces years ago, I wasn’t the best elastic wearer.
Many patients underestimate how important elastics are to treatment progress. Braces move individual teeth, but elastics help guide how the upper and lower teeth fit together.
Consistent wear can help treatment progress more efficiently and improve the final result.
6. Trust the Process
Orthodontic treatment can sometimes feel slow because tooth movement happens gradually.
We intentionally use light, gentle forces so teeth move safely and healthily through the bone.
The day-to-day changes may be difficult to notice, but those tiny movements accumulate over time.
Every appointment is another step toward your final smile.
Final Thoughts
Braces are a journey, not a sprint.
The patients who have the smoothest experiences are often not the ones with the “easiest” cases. They’re the ones who stay consistent with appointments, wear their elastics, communicate with their dentist, and trust the process.
Your future smile is being built one appointment at a time.
