Here’s a little “open secret” that many healthcare workers know.

When there’s heavy rain or a thunderstorm, clinics often experience more last-minute cancellations or no-shows than usual. Many patients simply don’t feel like travelling through bad weather unless they’re dealing with something urgent.

During my time working in the public healthcare system, this was something we noticed regularly. A heavy downpour could suddenly make an otherwise busy clinic much quieter for a few hours.

For many appointments, especially routine check-ups, cleanings, or reviews, patients may decide that it’s easier to postpone than to brave the rain. travelling in a thunderstorm isn’t exactly enjoyable.

If you’ve been waiting a long time for an appointment and notice it’s pouring outside, it doesn’t hurt to call the clinic and politely ask if there have been any cancellations. Many clinics keep cancellation lists or are happy to offer newly available slots to patients who can come in on short notice. There’s no guarantee that an appointment will be available, but it only takes a minute to ask.
