things i wish someone told me as a dental student (Copy)

there are things i wish someone had told me when i was a dental student.

maybe someone did — but at that time, i didn't fully believe it. because i didn't have enough faith in myself.

if you're in the thick of it right now — wherever you are in the world — this post is for you.

failed your competency… again?

(like, the 5th time?)

it's okay.

i know it doesn't feel okay. i know it's embarrassing, demoralising, and maybe a little bit soul-crushing. but you will get there eventually. every clinician you admire has a story of failure they don't always share out loud. yours is just part of the process.

nicked the adjacent tooth and had to buy another $2 plastic tooth?

it's okay.

that's literally how you learn. your hands are building muscle memory that no textbook can give you. you will get better — and one day, that precision will be second nature.

patient didn't show up and your schedule is completely ruined?

it's okay.

i know it feels like you're falling behind. i know the panic of watching your requirements slip further away. but you'll catch up, even if it doesn't feel like it now. things have a way of working out — even when the timeline looks nothing like what you planned.

struggling to complete your clinical requirements?

it's okay.

somehow, someway… things do fall into place. the requirements may feel impossible, but then one day, you tick them off and wonder why you were so worried.

if you're having a tough time right now

please know this phase won't last forever.

dental school is hard — genuinely, objectively hard. the pressure of requirements, the fear of failing competencies, the weight of caring for real patients while still learning. it's a lot. and if you're feeling like you're barely holding it together, that doesn't make you weak. it makes you human.

one day, you'll look back at this season and realise it shaped you. not in a cheesy way — in a real, tangible way. the struggles you're pushing through right now are building the clinician you're becoming.

so keep going 🦷

there are dentists out here who see you, who believe in you, and who are quietly cheering you on.

you are not alone in this. and you will get through it.
