1) everyone told me you can't DNF a marathon.
you can. i did. 🚫i ran for 7.5 hours.
and still didn't finish. 🏃♀️
if you don't have a real baseline of fitness, you will not cross the finish line.
it's not mind over matter.
2) nobody talks about what it's actually like at the back of the pack.
every gel station was empty by the time i got there.
the toilets? brutal. 💩
3)
my life couldn't stop for a marathon.
training should fit my lifestyle — not the other way round.
long runs wiped me out completely.
4)
post-race i was completely burnt out. fell sick. 🤒 the busiest month in dentistry.
extreme physical exertion on an underprepared body.
everything hit at once.
5) social media shows you medal monday & the finish line photo. 🏅
but no one shows you the buses transporting the DNF runners away from the course.
6) massive respect to everyone who has finished a marathon. truly. 🙌
i think it's a lot harder than the internet wants you to believe.
not everyone will complete a marathon — and that's ok too.

(also, as your dentist: marathon gels are terrible for your teeth 🦷 please rinse after taking them)
