“But I Brush My Teeth Twice a Day!” — Why You May Still Be Missing Plaque

Brushing Twice a Day Doesn’t Always Mean You’re Brushing Effectively

One of the most common things I hear from patients is:

“But I brush my teeth twice a day!”

And I believe them.

Most patients genuinely want to take care of their teeth. The issue is not always a lack of effort — sometimes it is simply that you cannot clean what you cannot see.

When I examine a patient’s mouth, I can often tell whether an area is covered with leftover food from a recent meal or whether it is an area where plaque has been accumulating because it has been consistently missed during brushing.

This is because plaque behaves differently from food debris. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that forms continuously on your teeth. If it is not removed properly, it can contribute to problems like tooth decay, gum inflammation, and gum disease.

The challenge is that plaque is often nearly invisible.

This is where plaque-disclosing products can help.

What Is Plaque Disclosing Toothpaste?

Plaque-disclosing toothpaste (or plaque-disclosing tablets) contains dyes that temporarily colour plaque on your teeth.

Depending on the product, the plaque may appear:

  • 🟣 Purple

  • 🟢 Green

  • 🩷 Pink

  • 🔵 Blue

The colour acts as a visual guide, showing you exactly where plaque is hiding.

Instead of guessing: “Am I brushing properly?”

You can actually see: “Oh, I keep missing this area.”

Think of it as a feedback tool for your brushing technique.

Why Do Dentists Recommend Plaque Disclosing Products?

Many people brush their teeth using the same routine every day. Over time, certain areas become “blind spots”.

Common areas patients miss include:

  • Along the gumline

  • Behind the lower front teeth

  • The outer surfaces of back teeth

  • Areas around orthodontic brackets

  • The inside surfaces of teeth

These areas are also places where plaque commonly builds up.

A plaque-disclosing product helps turn an invisible problem into something you can act on.

How to Use Plaque Disclosing Toothpaste

I usually recommend using it at night, especially on a day when you have a little more time.

Here is a simple routine:

Step 1: Brush your teeth normally

Start with your usual brushing routine with the plaque disclosing toothpaste.

A Small Tip: Protect Your Lips From Staining

Some plaque-disclosing products can temporarily stain areas around your mouth.

A simple trick is applying a thin layer of Vaseline or lip balm around your lips before using the product.

This can make cleanup easier afterwards.

Step 2: Check where the colour appears

Look carefully in the mirror.

Which areas are stained?

Are they areas you commonly miss?

Step 3: Improve your brushing technique

Use the feedback to focus on those specific areas during your next brushing session.

The goal is not to brush harder — it is to brush more accurately.

Is Plaque Disclosing Toothpaste Only For Kids?

Although many brands market plaque-disclosing products as children’s dental products, they can be useful for patients of all ages.

In fact, adults can benefit greatly from them because brushing habits are often established over many years.

Sometimes the missing piece is not motivation — it is awareness.

You may think you are brushing a certain area well, but the disclosing toothpaste may reveal something different.

Final Thoughts

Good oral hygiene is not just about brushing twice a day.

It is about:

✅ Knowing where plaque builds up
✅ Understanding your own brushing habits
✅ Making small improvements over time

Your toothbrush can only clean the areas you reach.

Sometimes, the best way to improve your brushing is simply to see what you have been missing.
